The fortress of Montbazon

The immense copper statue of the Madonna, perched at the top of a castle keep in Montbazon, heralds the spectacular medieval fortress in the distance. A visit to the castle is an immersive journey to the heart of the Middle Ages.

A visit accompanied by knights

The Montbazon fortress was built in the late 10th century by Foulques Nerra, Count of Anjou. Along with the Loches and Langeais castles, it is a member of a feudal triptych aimed at protecting the lands owned by the warrior-castle builder.

Standing on a rocky spur overlooking the Indre, the monumental structure is the scene for an enthralling experience with period costumes. The visit with commentary takes you from the castle keep to the ramparts, via the underground areas and the torture chamber.

A demonstration of a trebuchet catapult, followed by a combat between knights, takes spectators of all ages back to the world of the Black Falcon, one of the Middle Ages’ fiercest warriors!

All about medieval occupations

Within the castle walls, a wide range of workshops are on offer so you can try your hand at the occupations of the feudal era. You can see a blacksmith or a shingler at work. A stop at the herbalist will unveil the secrets of the medicinal plants grown in the medieval garden.

In exchange for the two medieval coins you are given on admission, you can make two little objects at the potter’s, at the calligrapher’s, the weaver’s, the sculptor’s or the wax maker’s.

An introduction to medieval cuisine

At any time of day, you can eat some delicious medieval fouées baked in a wood-fired oven at the inn. These are small stuffed rolls that are a traditional speciality in Anjou and Touraine.

Medieval banquets are also held in the big banqueting room in the fortress. During this summer event you can taste a range of dishes from the Middle Ages, announced by the barker and served on a wooden stretcher. Entertainment is provided all through the meal by a group of troubadours, magicians and fire-eaters.

How about continuing the adventure at the fortress of Chinon?
